Youngest Indians to reach 3,000 runs in Test cricket

What's the story

Shubman Gill led India from the front on Day 1 of the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. Gill's 50 (108) helped the visitors reach 300/5 in 85 overs. He earlier won the toss and elected to bat first. According to Cricbuzz, Gill is now the fourth-youngest Indian to reach 3,000 runs in Test cricket.

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar tops this elite list - 23 years and 228 days.

The Indian legend completed 3,000 Test runs in December 1996, seven years after his debut.

Tendulkar attained the feat in 45 Tests and 67 innings.

He concluded his Test career with 15,921 runs, the most in the format. He hammered 51 tons, also the most in Tests.

Virender Sehwag: 26y 157d

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag is second on this list. He completed 3,000 Test runs in November 2001, just over three years after his debut.

Sehwag, who transformed opening the innings in Test cricket, touched the 3,000-run mark in 34 Tests and 55 innings.

The former Indian batter was 26 years and 157 days old at that time.

Dilip Vengsarkar: 26d 263d

Former batter Dilip Vengsarkar, known to bail India out overseas, touched the 3,000-run mark being 26 days and 263 days old.

In a stellar career, Vengsarkar racked up 6,868 runs from 116 Tests at an average of 42.13. His tally includes 17 tons, 35 half-centuries, and a highest score of 166.

He also hammered over 17,000 runs in First-Class cricket.

Shubman Gill: 26y 349d

As mentioned, Shubman Gill is the latest entrant on this elite list.

At 26 years and 349 days, the Indian captain is the fourth-youngest to complete 3,000 runs in Test cricket.

Gill, who scored a half-century in Colombo, has now raced to 3,043 runs from 43 Tests at an average of 43.47. His conversion rate is excellent, with 11 tons and 9 half-centuries.

Kapil Dev: 26y 356d 

In Colombo, Gill surpassed former Indian captain Kapil Dev. The latter completed 3,000 Test runs in 26 years and 356 days.

One of the legendary all-rounders, Kapil bowed out with 5,248 runs from 131 Tests at an average of 31.05, including 9 tons.

Kapil also took 434 wickets, still the most for an Indian pacer in the format.
