Yuvraj Singh explains decision to stay away from commentary
What's the story
Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has revealed the reason behind his absence from live commentary. In an interview with Sports Tak, he said he doesn't want to work with people who have made personal comments about him. Though he didn't name anyone specifically, Yuvraj said some remarks have stuck with him as they went beyond his cricketing credentials.
Career shift
Yuvraj explains his decision
Yuvraj, one of India's finest limited-overs cricketers, retired from all forms of the game in 2019. He then ventured into business and personal coaching for players. However, he has avoided the common career path of broadcasting and commentary. "I don't want to sit with the people who passed personal remarks about me. That's the main reason I don't want to do commentary," Yuvraj said while explaining his decision.
Mentorship role
Yuvraj's role in shaping young players' careers
Despite staying away from commentary, Yuvraj has been instrumental in shaping the careers of several young players. He has worked with Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh from his home state, Punjab. Recently, he also guided Sanju Samson ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. "Coming to Sanju Samson, who failed in 8-10 innings... I told him we would speak whenever he had time," Yuvraj said about their conversation.
Guidance
Yuvraj advises Samson to work on footwork
Yuvraj advised Samson to improve his footwork, saying it was crucial for his performance. If you don't improve your footwork, you will consistently land in trouble, he said. The former Indian middle-order batter also spent time with Rishabh Pant, the captain of Lucknow Super Giants, ahead of IPL 2026 season.
