Zverev beats in-form Djokovic to grab first ATP Finals title

Alexander Zverev performed the miracle of the year as he won the ATP Finals title by defeating world number one Djokovic. After overcoming six-time ATP Finals champion, Roger Federer, in the semi-final, Alexander beat Djokovic in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. This is the first ATP Finals title for the 21-year-old German. Further details follow.

How did the match go about?

Alexander put in a commendable shift to win in straight sets against Djokovic. Notably, before this match Djokovic had won all 36 services in the tournament, and had faced only two break points. However, he was broken on four occasions by the German. The first set was tied at 4-4 from where Alexander won it easily, and dominated the Serb in the second set.

Zverev had earlier defeated Djokovic in the Rome Masters 1000

In May 2017, Alexander had defeated Djokovic to win the Rome Masters, which was his first Masters 1000 win. In that match, he had made Djokovic commit 27 unforced errors. After the match, even Djokovic had admitted that Alexander absolutely deserved to win it.

    Zverev's comments after the win

The German was booed when he had defeated Roger Federer in the semi-final, but he displayed his class when he took down the current world number one in style. After the match, he thanked Djokovic, for "letting me win one today when you can win any match you want." The winner also thanked his coach Ivan Lendl for joining his team.

Zverev's win a positive sign for tennis

Recently, Naomi Osaka had won the US Open by defeating Serena Williams. And now with Zverev's triumphs over Djokovic and Federer, we can finally say the fresh batch of tennis champions are here. He is also the first German since Boris Becker in 1995 to win the ATP Finals. This win will see him enter the top 10 in world rankings.
