China opens world's tallest bridge, 2× height of Eiffel Tower
What's the story
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, the world's highest bridge, was inaugurated on Sunday in Southwest China's Guizhou Province. The 2,890-meter-long bridge has a vertical height of 625 meters—twice the height of the Eiffel Tower (330m). It is also the longest span bridge built in a mountainous area with a main span of 1,420 meters.
Engineering marvel
Technological breakthroughs
Construction of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge started in 2022 and involved several technological breakthroughs, including wind-resistant design and high-altitude construction. The bridge uses advanced technologies like an intelligent cable hoisting system and high-strength steel wire, earning 21 patents. The bridge has drastically reduced travel time across the canyon from two hours to two minutes.
Community impact
Local residents celebrate
The bridge's opening has been a cause for celebration among locals. Lu Qiong, a Buyi ethnic group member, donned her traditional costume to witness the historic moment. "I feel extremely excited to witness this super project," she was quoted as saying by Global Times. Liang Shaoyu, the former head of Huajiang Village, recalled how villagers used bamboo boats and a lime-built bridge to cross the river. "From the age of eight, I witnessed...the harsh conditions in our village," Liang said.
Infrastructure leader
China's infrastructure capabilities
Guizhou is home to over 32,000 bridges and accounts for nearly half of the world's top 100 highest bridges. Liu Hao, chief project engineer of Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, highlighted China's unique ability to build such infrastructure due to its national conditions. "Only in China our national conditions affirm the superiority of [socialism with Chinese characteristics]," he told Global Times.

Features
Café 800 meters above the river
Beyond transportation, the bridge has focused on integrating tourism resources, establishing a new model for bridge tourism. It has a café 800 meters above the river and a 1,000-square-meter glass observation hall with a steep drop of more than 600 meters to the river. People can also enjoy activities such as "sky balance beam," bungee jumping, and low-altitude skydiving.
