Singapore: 2 Indians jailed for robbing, assaulting sex workers
What's the story
Two Indian nationals, Arokkiyasami Daison (23) and Rajendran Mayilarasan (27), were sentenced to five years and one month in prison on Friday, October 3. The duo was found guilty of robbing and assaulting two sex workers during their vacation in Singapore. They also received 12 strokes of the cane as part of their sentence. The incident occurred on April 26, when they met the victims at their hotel rooms after receiving contact information from an unknown man they had met.
Crime revelation
Details of the 2 robberies
The first robbery took place in a hotel room around 6:00pm on April 26. The victims were tied up, slapped, and robbed of jewelry and SGD 2,000 (around ₹1.37 lakh). Arokkiyasami and Rajendran also stole passports and bank cards during this incident. The second robbery occurred later that night at another hotel, where they stole SGD 800 (around ₹55,070), two mobile phones, and a passport from the second victim.
Arrest aftermath
Accused sought leniency from judge
The crimes came to light when the second victim confided in another man, leading to police involvement. Both Arokkiyasami and Rajendran pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt during their trial. They sought leniency from the judge during mitigation, citing financial difficulties back home as reasons for their actions. The court's decision was based on Singapore's laws, which prescribe a minimum of five years' imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane for such offenses.
