What's the story

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Thursday awarded the Order of Oman, the Sultanate's uniquely distinct civilian honor. The award was conferred by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik in recognition of PM Modi's efforts to strengthen bilateral ties. This honor comes during his two-day visit to Oman, which is the last stop on his three-nation tour that also included Jordan and Ethiopia.

Diplomatic milestone

PM Modi's visit marks 70 years of India-Oman relations

PM Modi's visit to Muscat is significant as it marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Oman. During his visit, the two nations signed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) on Thursday. Under the deal, Oman has offered zero-duty access to 98.08% of its tariff lines, accounting for 99.38% of India's exports in value. This enables nearly universal market access for Indian goods, particularly in labor-intensive industries like textiles, leather, footwear, gems and jewelry, and vehicles.

Global recognition

PM Modi's growing list of international honors

The Order of Oman is the latest addition to PM Modi's long list of over 28 top civilian awards from foreign countries. These include recent accolades such as Ethiopia's Great Honour Nishan and Kuwait's Order of Mubarak Al-Kabeer. The Ethiopian award was conferred on Tuesday at the Addis International Convention Centre for his contributions to strengthening India-Ethiopia ties and his visionary leadership on the global stage.
