What's the story

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Tuesday, with strong tremors felt in Kolkata and various parts of Bangladesh. According to EMSC data, the earthquake hit 70 miles east of Akyab in Myanmar. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) said the quake was at a depth of 10km (6.21 miles). There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Earthquake hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Several users took to social media to share their experiences as tremors were felt across cities. One user posted, "Earthquake in Kolkata? Did anyone else feel it?" Another wrote, "We just felt an earthquake sitting at the office." This quake comes a day after an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Monday at around 3:30am.

Quake killed over 5,000 last year 

In March 2025, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar's Sagaing Region, with the epicenter near Mandalay, the country's second-largest city. It was the most violent earthquake to hit Myanmar since 1912 and the second deadliest in the country's modern history. The earthquake caused widespread damage in Myanmar, notably near the rupture, as well as substantial damage in neighboring Thailand. The earthquake killed more than 5,000 people in Myanmar and 103 in Thailand.
