Pakistan woman journalist killed by husband for not quitting job

A woman journalist was shot dead outside her workplace, allegedly by her husband, in Lahore, Pakistan, on Monday. The deceased, identified as Urooj Iqbal (27), worked at a local newspaper and faced marital issues with her husband, Dilawar Ali, who wanted her to quit the job. Ali also allegedly gave death threats to his wife prior to her murder, Iqbal's brother claimed.

Iqbal shot in the head; died instantly

On Monday, Iqbal was shot outside her workplace, which falls within the station limits of Qila Gujjar Singh police. She suffered a bullet wound to the head and instantly succumbed to her injuries. Civil Lines Operations SP Dost Mohammad told Dawn that witnesses couldn't identify the attacker, however, her brother, Yasir, filed a complaint accusing Ali of murder.

Husband sent her death threats mere days ago, alleges brother

In his complaint, Yasir alleged that the deceased received death threats from Ali over a call a few days ago. Ali and Iqbal had been facing issues since getting married seven months ago. Although it was a love marriage, their relationship turned sour over several disagreements. Ali, also a journalist, reportedly tortured Iqbal on "petty matters" and was forcing her to quit her job.

In the past, Iqbal had filed case against husband

According to the brother, Iqbal had once even filed a case against Ali at a local police station, detailing the torture. Although the matter was resolved between elders on both sides, Ali developed a grudge against his wife, Dawn reported.

CCTV footage obtained from crime scene

Based on Yasir's complaint, the police have registered a case and are on the lookout for the suspect. They have procured the CCTV footage from the scene of the crime. Reportedly, Iqbal was living in a room adjacent to her workplace, which was in the same building. The CCTV footage has been sent for forensic analysis. Iqbal's body has been sent for an autopsy.
