What's the story

Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to expand its iconic G-Class lineup with a new entry-level model, the "Little G." The compact SUV will be smaller than the current G-Class but will retain its distinctive boxy design. It will be built on a unique platform, with most of its bodywork made from unique components. The "Little G" is expected to launch by 2027 and could take on Land Rover's upcoming Defender Sport.

EV focus

'Little G' to be an all-electric model

Unlike the current G-Class models, which come with ICE and electric powertrains, the "Little G" will be offered exclusively as an EV. Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener has said that the styling of the new car will be a "tweaked" version of the G-Class, but it will look even more modern than last year's electric G-Class (G580 EQ).

Design

It will feature unique components and design tweaks

The "Little G" will have a unique lighting signature, different from the larger combustion and electric G-Class variants. Wagener said, "You cannot change the G much: it's iconic. On the little one, we will give a slight tweak: a bit more sharpness, a bit younger [headlight] graphics but still circle." He emphasized that while they want to modernize the design slightly, they also want to keep its iconic look intact.

Platform specifics

'Little G' to sit on a unique platform

Former tech boss Markus Schafer revealed that the "Little G" will be built on a unique architecture to ensure it is as authentic as possible. He described the platform as a "miniature ladder-frame chassis," similar in suspension and wheel size but not to the same extent as the G-Class's ladder-frame.
