What's the story

Tata Motors is gearing up to launch its first three-row electric vehicle (EV), the Safari EV, by the festive season of 2026. The upcoming model will take over from Harrier EV as Tata's flagship electric car. It will be built on the same platform as Harrier EV and share powertrains with it.

Technical specifications

The Safari EV will share powertrains with Harrier EV

The Safari EV will be built on the 'acti.ev+' architecture, just like Harrier EV. This is an ICE-to-EV conversion, not a born-EV. The new model is expected to offer the same battery and motor options as Harrier EV: 65kWh and 75kWh units with a single rear motor (RWD) as standard. An all-wheel-drive (AWD) layout could also be offered for the Safari EV.

Performance expectations

It will likely support up to 100kW DC fast charging

The Harrier EV offers an ARAI-claimed range of 627km for its 75kWh RWD powertrain. However, since the Safari is larger and heavier, its EV derivative will likely have slightly lower claimed range figures. The new model is also expected to support up to 100kW DC fast charging. Other features expected to be carried over from the Harrier EV include multiple terrain modes and a multi-link rear suspension with frequency-dependent dampers for improved ride comfort.

Aesthetic details

It will sport minor styling changes

The Safari EV is expected to sport minor styling changes like a closed-off grille section, slightly revised bumpers, EV-specific badging, and aero-optimised alloy wheel designs. The interior layout of the new model is likely to remain unchanged from its ICE version. However, it will benefit from the TiDAL (Tata Intelligent Digital Architecture Layer) E&E architecture introduced with Harrier EV.

Competitive edge

It will mainly compete with Mahindra XUV 9s

Tata is likely to start production of the Safari EV by August 2026, ahead of its festive season launch. The new model will complete Tata's electric SUV line-up. Once launched, every current Tata SUV will be available with ICE and EV powertrains. The Safari EV is also expected to bring in 1,000-1,500 units of incremental sales for Tata. It will mainly compete with Mahindra XEV 9S in the market.
