Tesla is world's top seller of electric cars again
What's the story
Tesla has reclaimed its position as the world's largest seller of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the first quarter of 2026. The US automaker delivered 358,023 units globally between January and March, a 6.5% increase year-on-year. This growth helped it overtake China's BYD, which saw a 25.5% drop in sales during the same period. BYD's BEV sales stood at 310,389 units in Q1 2026.
Market dynamics
BYD's decline in sales attributed to domestic market setback
BYD's decline in sales can be attributed to a setback in its domestic market, which is its major source of growth, said Gao Shen, an independent analyst in Shanghai. In contrast, Tesla continues to maintain stable sales owing to its large global customer base.
Market rivalry
Tesla regains its position after losing it in Q4 2023
Since mid-2023, Tesla and BYD have been competing for the title of world's largest BEV manufacturer. In Q4 2023, BYD had surpassed Tesla in pure electric car deliveries for the first time. However, with its recent performance in Q1 2026, Tesla has once again taken the lead in this highly competitive market.
