Toyota unveils all-new Hilux with electric, hybrid, and ICE options
What's the story
Toyota has unveiled the ninth generation of its iconic Hilux model. The global launch event held in Bangkok marks a major transformation for the vehicle, which has been around for over five decades. The new Hilux range includes a battery electric vehicle (BEV) for the first time and a 48V hybrid version. It also offers internal combustion engines (ICE) for select markets and plans to add a hydrogen fuel cell variant by 2028.
Design evolution
New Hilux features a 'tough and agile' design theme
Despite its off-road prowess, the new Hilux retains its core identity of toughness. The exterior sports a "Tough and Agile" theme with a bold, squared-off stance. The front gets slim, horizontal headlamps connected by a central bar with the Toyota script. The BEV variant has a closed-off grille for better aerodynamics.
User-friendly upgrades
It gets an integrated rear deck step for easier access
The new Hilux also comes with a Double Cab body style across the range, to meet customer demand. Convenience features include an integrated rear deck step and redesigned side steps for easier access to the cargo bed. For Western markets, electric power steering has been introduced for the first time, promising lighter operation and less kickback on uneven terrain.
Tech advancements
The cabin features a horizontally-oriented dashboard layout
The interior of the new Hilux is a big step up in comfort, refinement and digital tech. The cabin features a new horizontally-oriented dashboard layout with a fully digital 12.3-inch driver's instrument display and a large central touchscreen of up to 12.3-inch. The cabin also gets wireless charging and extra USB ports, while connected services can be accessed via the MyToyota smartphone app for remote vehicle data access like location, fuel/battery status, and driving history.
Electric debut
Hilux BEV will be the 1st to hit markets
The most important addition is the Hilux BEV, which will be the first to hit markets when the model launches in December 2025. The electric Hilux is powered by a 59.2kWh lithium-ion battery and dual eAxles that provide permanent all-wheel drive. Early estimates indicate a driving range of around 240km (WLTP), a payload of some 715kg, and towing capacity of about 1,600kg.
Hybrid model
Hilux Hybrid 48V will be the volume seller in Europe
The Hilux Hybrid 48V, which will be the volume seller in Europe, combines a 48V lithium-ion battery and motor-generator system with the 2.8-liter diesel engine. The system improves refinement at low speeds, enhances throttle response and assists during acceleration while maintaining the Hilux's capability to carry payloads of up to one ton and tow braked trailers of up to 3,500kg. Production of this hybrid variant will begin in spring 2026.
Engine options
ICE variants will continue to be offered in select markets
The latest 2.8-liter diesel engine will replace the previous 2.4-liter unit in Eastern Europe and select global markets. The familiar 2.7-liter petrol engine will also be offered in these regions, ensuring that traditional powertrains are still supported where fuel infrastructure and usage demands favor them. Toyota has also expanded the Hilux's safety and driver assistance offering through the Toyota T-Mate suite with updated/new systems depending on market.
