ADB to invest $4.3B in India across 16 projects

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced a major investment of $4.258 billion in India for the year 2025. The funding will be used to support 16 different projects across a range of sectors, including skill development, renewable energy, urban infrastructure, healthcare services, and ecotourism. The announcement was made by ADB Country Director for India Mio Oka on Friday.

Investment focus areas in India

The ADB's investment portfolio for 2025 is heavily focused on human and social development, with nearly 32% of the projects falling under this category. The energy sector, mainly focusing on renewable energy, accounts for 26% of the projects. Urban development makes up over 18% of the portfolio. Other sectors include transport and ecotourism.

Project highlights

Major projects funded by ADB in India

Among the major projects funded by ADB is an $846 million financing initiative for PM-SETU, India's flagship skilling program. The money will be used to modernize hundreds of Industrial Training Institutes across states and enhance employability. Another major project is a $650 million funding for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a national program aimed at expanding rooftop solar adoption across the country.

Urban development

Commitment to urban transformation in India

Reiterating its commitment to India's urban transformation, ADB has committed $775 million for five projects in Assam, Kerala, Sikkim, and West Bengal. The investment will be used to upgrade and expand urban services such as water supply and sanitation. Additionally, $729 million has been committed for expanding regional rapid rail in Delhi-Meerut and metro networks in Chennai and Indore.

Sectoral support

Support for healthcare and ecotourism in India

ADB has also committed a $460 million loan to Maharashtra to modernize rural power infrastructure and improve solar electricity for irrigation. In Assam, a $398.8 million loan will help modernize its healthcare and medical education systems. Over $200 million has been allocated to Meghalaya and Uttarakhand for ecotourism development.
