Gold hits ₹1.29L/10g on Dhanteras; silver up 55% since last year
Gold prices in India soared to ₹1,29,440 per 10gm this Dhanteras—about a 60% jump from last year.
Silver wasn't far behind, climbing about 55% to ₹1,80,000 per kg.
Even with these record highs and a recent dip on the MCX, people still turned up to buy, choosing lighter jewelry and coins to keep things affordable.
Other big-ticket items people splurged on
Dhanteras shopping wasn't just about precious metals. Shoppers spent around ₹15,000 crore on utensils and kitchenware/appliances, ₹10,000 crore on electronics, plus another ₹12,000 crore on sweets, textiles, and vehicles.
Lower GST rates and the "Swadeshi Aapnao" push made Indian-made products extra popular this year.
How did jewelers fare?
With gold and silver so expensive, people bought about 15-20% less by weight, but overall sales value actually rose 25% compared to last year.
Jewelers offered EMIs and festive discounts, and many buyers opted for lighter, trendier pieces or even alternative metals to keep up with tradition without breaking the bank.
