How Nayara Energy sidestepped EU sanctions on Russian oil imports

Business

After the EU hit Nayara Energy—a Russian-backed Indian oil company—with fresh sanctions in July 2025, the company quickly paused exports for two weeks.
Now, it's back in action, sending diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel to new places like the Middle East, Turkey, Taiwan, and Brazil.
They're using ship-to-ship transfers, as reported off Oman and Egypt.

The impact of sanctions and Nayara's response

The sanctions took a toll: Nayara's exports dropped from 138,000 barrels per day earlier this year to about 80,000 in August and September.
The Vadinar refinery had to cut operations down to 70-80% capacity.
Still, they managed to ship out 16 cargoes since August by finding new routes—showing some real adaptability under pressure.
