India and New Zealand almost ready to seal free trade deal

Business

India and New Zealand are close to wrapping up a free trade agreement, according to Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal.
The current round of talks was launched in March 2025, following earlier negotiations that began in 2010 and stalled in 2015, with both countries meeting several times—virtually and in person.
Just last week, New Zealand's Trade Minister Todd McClay was in India checking on the progress with Minister Piyush Goyal.

What this FTA means for both countries

This deal could give a real boost to business between India and New Zealand. In the financial year 2024-25, their trade jumped 49% to $1.3 billion!
India mainly sends textiles, medicines, and machinery there, while bringing back agricultural products and minerals.
The FTA aims to cut or remove tariffs on traded goods—making it easier for businesses on both sides and creating a more predictable environment for future deals.
