China's grip on rare earth supplies—nearly 90% of the global market—has caused headaches for industries like automotive, especially after new export curbs.
Now, Indian startups are jumping in with clever workarounds, building motors that don't rely on Chinese materials and helping keep production lines moving.
Startups are developing alternative motors
Chara Technologies is rolling out iron-based motors with copper windings instead of rare earths, already making 500 units a month and aiming for 2,000 soon.
Conifer is using ferrite magnets in its axial-flux motors—a cheaper and more available option.
Viridian Igni Propulsion is also in the mix, working on efficient designs that skip rare earths altogether.
Together, these companies are cutting costs and supply risks while pushing for greener tech.
