India's only chip-making lab gets a big upgrade
India's one and only chip-making facility, the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali, is getting a massive ₹4,500 crore upgrade over the next three years.
This means way more chips can be made here—production will jump from around 500 to 1,500 wafers each month.
Plus, new tech and testing infrastructure and new tools are coming in to make SCL way more advanced.
Why does this matter?
SCL isn't just making chips—it's becoming a national hub for research, training, and supporting startups.
Students from over 300 universities are already using SCL's design tools; just last week, 28 student-designed chips were actually built there.
The government wants to expand the lab with more land and promises it'll stay public—not privatized—making SCL key to India's push for homegrown tech and jobs.
