Meta lays off 600 employees from its AI divisions
Business
Meta (the folks behind Facebook and Instagram) recently laid off about 600 people from its AI divisions, including the FAIR research group and key product teams.
The company says it's trying to speed up decision-making by trimming management layers.
TBD Lab is still hiring
While most AI teams saw cuts, the newer TBD Lab—focused on building next-gen AI models—is still hiring.
Employees who were let go are getting at least 16 weeks of pay as severance and can apply for other roles at Meta until November 21.
Meta is also working on open-sourcing Llama
Meta is keeping its AI ambitions alive by open-sourcing Llama, its language model—unlike Google or OpenAI, which keep theirs locked up.
Plus, employees can use Metamate, an in-house chatbot that helps them write performance reviews by summarizing their work!
