Tata Sky DTH: Choosing right set-top box for your TV

When buying a new TV, we give so much importance to just about everything - size, resolution, connectivity ports, etc. However, when it comes to set-top boxes (STBs) - the essential hardware that brings content to our TVs - we seldom pay attention to the details. So, if you are buying a new Tata Sky connection, here's all you need to know about STBs.

    Tata Sky SD

This is the entry-level STB, compatible with TVs that have AV ports, offers standard definition (SD) channels with DVD picture quality and CD quality sound. The SD STB is priced at Rs. 1,499 and you will have to subscribe to a channel pack separately. Based on the channel pack, additional charges will apply including subscription fee, Network Capacity Fees (NCF) and taxes.

    Tata Sky HD

If you have a TV with an HDMI port, you should buy the Tata Sky HD STB. This STB brings cinematic experience with 1080i resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio along with Dolby Digital Surround Sound. The HD STB is priced at Rs. 1,699 and you will have to subscribe to a channel pack separately.

    Tata Sky 4K

Alongside the SD and HD STBs, Tata Sky also offers a 4K set-top box in India. However, there are no 4K channels currently available in the country. This STB is compatible with 4K/Ultra HD TVs and offers four times the resolution of Full HD as well as 10-bit color. It is priced at Rs. 6,400 and channel packs will have to be subscribed separately.

    Tata Sky+ HD

Tata Sky+ HD is the most expensive STB, offering 1080i resolution with cinema style Dolby Digital Surround Sound. It also lets you record up to three shows or programs simultaneously, thanks to a 500GB hard drive built-into the STB. You can record shows when powered on or in standby mode as well. The price of this STB is Rs. 9,300.
