RBI says ₹2,000 notes worth ₹5,817cr are still in circulation

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revealed that high-value ₹2,000 notes worth a whopping ₹5,817 crore are still in circulation. The central bank had announced the withdrawal of these notes on May 19, 2023. However, despite the announcement and subsequent measures to facilitate their return or exchange, a small portion of these high-denomination banknotes remains with the public, as 98.37% have been returned.

The banknotes are still considered legal tender
Despite the RBI's decision to withdraw them, the ₹2,000 banknotes are still considered legal tender. According to the central bank's statement, the total value of these notes in circulation was ₹3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023. As of October 31, 2025, it has now come down to ₹5,817 crore.
Exchange options
Facilities to exchange ₹2,000 banknotes
The RBI has been providing facilities to exchange ₹2,000 banknotes at its 19 issue offices since May 19, 2023. From October 9, 2023, these offices have also started accepting ₹2,000 banknotes from individuals or entities for deposit into their bank accounts. The public can also send these notes through India Post from any post office in the nation to any of the RBI issue offices for credit to their bank accounts.
