    What's the story

UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the toughest exams and cracking it isn't easy without proper preparation.

It is a three-level examination comprising Prelims, Mains, and Personality Test. While lakhs of candidates take CSE every year, only a few hundred get selected. Most candidates don't get qualified because of preparation flaws.

Here are some mistakes to avoid while preparing for Mains.

    #1

Not having a proper preparation plan is a huge mistake

One of the biggest mistakes aspirants make is, not having a proper preparation plan. CSE Mains involve vast syllabus and adhering to a proper plan is a must to cover the syllabus in time.

Another common preparation mistake is not sticking to the syllabus prescribed by UPSC. One should start their preparation by referring to the latest syllabus and then devise a plan accordingly.

    #2

Not revising and practicing regularly; not solving previous papers, mock-tests

Some aspirants tend to focus only on studying but not on revising the topics, which is a mistake.

It is important to revise the entire syllabus thoroughly at least twice before the exams; written practice is essential too. Lack of consistent preparation and regular practice/revision may impact their preparation adversely.

Apart from revision and practice, they should solve previous papers and mock tests.

    Information

#3: Ignoring basics and consulting too many books

Ignoring the basics and NCERT textbooks is also a mistake; these are important as questions based on NCERT books/fundamentals may be asked. Aspirants are required to consult various books/study material to prepare, but going through too many books may create confusion and should be avoided.

    #4

Not choosing the right optional subject for CSE Mains

Choosing the optional subject for Mains is a crucial decision and not selecting the right one could be a terrible mistake.

Aspirants must make the decision after carefully considering various factors like their educational background, interests, and the availability of guidance/coaching/study material for that subject.

Most importantly, they should choose a subject that they are interested in and comfortable with.

    Information

#5: Not reading newspapers regularly is a huge mistake

Ignoring newspapers and not spending enough time to read them is another huge mistake that aspirants should avoid. Reading the newspapers every day is important as it can help aspirants in enhancing their knowledge, improving reading/writing skills, and staying updated with the current affairs.
