Oscars 2022: 5 interesting highlights from this year's event
The 94th Academy Awards concluded on Monday. Held at its usual venue, that is the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, it was hosted by Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes. While CODA won the Best Picture, Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog) was adjudged the Best Director. In this article, we will discuss five interesting facts about this year's Oscars.
Will Smith won his first Oscar for King Richard. He had won a SAG Award and a Golden Globes for the same film. Notably, Smith's previous Oscars nods were for Ali (2001) and The Pursuit of Happyness (2007). Jessica Chastain also got her maiden Oscar for The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Furthermore, Riz Ahmed and Kenneth Branagh scored their maiden Oscar wins this year.
Interestingly, this is the first time the Oscars had three hosts: Hall, Schumer, and Sykes. On this, Schumer commented, "This year, the Academy hired three women to host because it's cheaper than hiring one man." Also, when Hall and Sykes talked of the communities they represent, Schumer remarked, "I'm representing unbearable white women who call the cops when you get a little too loud."
The Korean pop sensation, BTS, made a surprise entry at the Oscars though the band was not physically present at the Dolby Theatre. Via a pre-recorded segment titled Favorite Film Musical With BTS, the six-time Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers sent love to the Disney and Pixar animated films. Coco is both Jimin and RM's favorite, while J-Hope said he really likes Will Smith's Aladdin.
When stand-up comedian Chris Rock took the stage to present the Oscar for best documentary feature, he insensitively joked about Jada Pinkett Smith being present in G.I. Jane 2 because of her shaved head. Reacting to this, her husband, actor-producer Smith, went to the stage and punched Rock. Once back in his seat, Smith shouted, "Keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth!"
Several portals lauded Zendaya's Oscars outfit this year. She donned a two-piece Valentino set comprising a white short shirt and silver skirt. Singer Billie Eilish and actors Lupita Nyong'o, Zoë Kravitz, Rachel Zegler, Timothée Chalamet, Wesley Snipes, and Andrew Garfield, among others, were the ones who impressed the fashion police. Meanwhile, Pinkett Smith, Kristen Stewart, and Maggie Gyllenhaal suffered fashion fails at the event.
