What's the story

The Telangana Cricket Association (TCA) has issued legal notices to actor Vijay Deverakonda, actor Venkatesh Daggubati, international cricketer Mohammed Siraj, former cricketer Ambati Rayudu, and cricketer Tilak Varma. The notices pertain to their alleged involvement in the proposed TG20 League. TCA claims that the tournament is unauthorized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). All five were reportedly involved with the league in some promotional capacity.

Allegations

HCA is dealing with corporate entities without BCCI's authorization

TCA General Secretary Gurava Reddy has alleged that the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) is dealing with corporate entities without BCCI's authorization. He said promoting the league without approval is an offense under BCCI norms and called it "illegal" and "unapproved." He also raised concerns about the unclear regulatory status of the tournament and celebrity endorsements on public perception. The league has changed its name several times in recent years, but the core issues remain unresolved, said Reddy.

Legal basis

Reddy cited BCCI Rule 28

Reddy cited BCCI Rule 28, which mandates that a governing council running such a league be elected at the association's annual general body meeting. He said neither requirement was met in this case. "This is a mandatory rule for every BCCI member association, not an optional guideline."

Warning issued

TCA will move court if celebrities continue their association

Reddy warned that TCA will move court if the named celebrities continue their association with the league. He said HCA is using celebrity backing to hide its lack of legal compliance. He confirmed that legal suits will follow the notices if the celebrities stay involved. The TCA General Secretary also pointed out that HCA has not complied with a BCCI directive from 2021, requiring it to work with TCA on cricket development outside Hyderabad city.

Demand made

Demand for separate BCCI recognition

Reddy further reiterated TCA's demand for separate BCCI recognition, stating that over 20,000 cricketers are linked with TCA outside Hyderabad city. He added that these players have been waiting for recognition since Telangana became a separate state in 2014. This delay runs against the constitutional provision he cited. The matter is currently pending before the Bombay High Court, with a final hearing expected in the first week of July.
