What's the story

NBC's Saturday Night Live (SNL) is set to make history with a record 17 of its 20 guest hosts from Season 49 being listed on the Emmy Awards ballot in the guest acting race. This marks the highest number of submissions from the show in the past five seasons. The iconic sketch comedy show, now heading into its 50th year, has seen an impressive lineup of hosts this season.

Nominees

Confirmed submissions include comedians, former cast, and A-listers

Confirmed submissions for the guest acting Emmy include comedians Nate Bargatze, Shane Gillis, and Ramy Youssef. Former SNL cast members Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, and Maya Rudolph are also on the list. Hollywood A-listers Timothée Chalamet, Emma Stone, Adam Driver, Jacob Elordi, Ayo Edebiri, Sydney Sweeney, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Jason Momoa have been submitted as well.

Pending confirmations

Uncertainty surrounds submissions of musical stars and this actor

Musical stars Bad Bunny and Dua Lipa, along with actor Dakota Johnson, are yet to be confirmed for submission in the guest acting Emmy race. The network or talent representatives made all submissions, with potential adjustments expected before voting opens on June 13. However, it remains unclear which stars were submitted by the network and which by their representatives.

Season recap

'SNL' Season 49 ended strong despite initial hurdles

Despite a rocky start due to Hollywood strikes in October, SNL ended strong with multiple viral videos and memorable moments. The top five most-watched episodes this season were hosted by Bargatze (4.85M), Davidson (4.78M), Lipa (4.73M), Gosling (M), and Brolin (4.64M). Historically, SNL has been strategic about not submitting too many hosts to avoid vote-splitting among contenders.

Multiple bids

Hosts seeking multiple nominations, making races highly competitive

This season's submissions make the guest acting race highly competitive. Gosling's viral "Beavis & Butt-Head" sketch makes him a top contender for his first nomination. Many hosts are seeking more than one nomination outside the category including Stone for The Curse and Youssef for directing an episode of The Bear and his HBO stand-up special More Feelings. Gillis will have double bids, too, with his new Netflix comedy Tires.

Female contenders

Female SNL hosts in strong position for guest actor category

In the guest actor category, Jamie Lee Curtis and Sarah Paulson are early favorites for The Bear, while multiple members from HBO/Max's Hacks could be dark horses. Despite a robust list of names, female SNL hosts are in a stronger overall position than their male counterparts. Rudolph has six nominations in the category's history placing her third behind Cloris Leachman's eight and Tina Fey's nine nominations.

Supporting categories

'SNL' regular cast and featured players expected on ballots

Wiig, despite her nine Emmy nods, has never won. All regular cast members and five featured players are expected to be listed on the ballots for supporting comedy acting categories. Since guest hosts were allowed to submit in guest acting races in 2009, SNL has missed out on an Emmy only five times, including the past two years.
