'Midnight Sun': Netflix greenlights 2 seasons of 'Twilight' animated series
What's the story
Netflix has made a significant commitment to the upcoming animated series based on Stephenie Meyer's Midnight Sun, a retelling of Twilight from Edward Cullen's perspective. The streaming platform has ordered two seasons of the show, Lionsgate announced during its Q2 2027 earnings call on Thursday. This is an unusual move for Netflix, which typically orders new shows one season at a time.
Franchise details
Lionsgate has high expectations for the series
Kevin Beggs, Chairman of the Lionsgate Television Group, said that Meyer's love for television and animation led to the adaptation of Midnight Sun.
He added, "That's a 2-Season adult animation order at Netflix. Stephenie and her team are very hands-on, really running the process along with us at Netflix."
Lionsgate has "high expectations" for the series as it sees it as a "continuation and expansion" of the Twilight universe.
Audience demand
Ongoing conversations about expanding 'Twilight' on film front
Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson said the studio knows the Twilight audience is "desperate for more authentic content."
He added that conversations with Meyer about the film franchise are ongoing.
Production for Midnight Sun has been reported to take place from August 2026 to May 2027, with Los Angeles serving as the hub for voice recording and production.
The series is expected to premiere on Netflix in late 2027 or, more likely, in 2028, per What's on Netflix.
