What's the story

The Delhi High Court has ordered Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav to surrender before the concerned jail superintendent by 4:00pm on February 4. The order comes in relation to multiple check bounce cases against him and his wife, which they had challenged under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma expressed disappointment over Yadav's repeated failure to honor settlement commitments despite being given several opportunities, reported IANS.

Court's observation

'Repeatedly breached undertakings given': Court

The court observed, "Despite repeatedly giving assurances and seeking indulgence of this court, he has failed to comply with the orders passed from time to time." It added that Yadav had "repeatedly breached undertakings given before this court." The court also noted that the sentence awarded by the trial court had been suspended as early as June 28, 2024, after the actor and his wife showed a willingness to amicably settle the dispute with the complainant company.

Non-compliance

No payment made for nearly a year

The court further noted that no payment was made for nearly a year despite assurances and specific timelines set by the Delhi High Court. This lack of compliance led Justice Sharma to conclude that there was no justification for continuing the indulgence granted to Yadav earlier. The order also directed the release of the amount already deposited with the Registrar General to the complainant company.

Professional engagement

Court grants some leeway to Yadav

Despite the stern order, the court granted Yadav some leeway by allowing him time till February 4 to surrender. This concession was made considering his current professional engagements in Mumbai. The matter is scheduled for compliance from the concerned jail authorities on February 5. On the work front, Yadav was last seen in the ZEE5 film Interrogation.
