What's the story

SonyLIV's new original Tamil series, Kuttram Purindhavan, is directed by Selvamani and is a Drishyam-like twisted thriller that explores morality, crime, and ethical dilemmas. Spread over seven episodes, the gripping series keeps you engaged at every juncture and pulls you into its raw, realistic world. Anchored by Pasupathy, Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli, and Vidaarth's powerful performances, the show is among the best this year.

Plot

How far does one go to hide secrets?

The series focuses on a man named Bhaskaran (Pasupathy) who is struggling for his grandson, Rahul's, treatment. His journey is intertwined with that of Mercy, a young girl who lives next door. She suddenly vanishes one night, leaving no trace behind. Who's behind her disappearance? Will she ever be found? And, is there more to Bhaskaran than meets the eye?

#1

Expertly analyzes the issue of child safety

The disappearance of children, particularly girls, is a recurring idea in Indian cinema. Not too long ago, it was explored in Maa, Vash, and Khauf. Kuttram Purindhavan plays with the same idea, but it's not so much about the mystery as it is about the incident's aftermath and chilling repercussions. A child's disappearance impacts the community and not just her family, after all.

#2

More on the above aspect

The show works well as a meticulous human study. What do you do when life leaves you no option? Do you trudge on or choose an immoral path, fully aware of its ramifications? The lead character, Bhaskaran, is one such multilayered man. Crushed by the sheer weight of life, he's unsure about his future, struggling on all fronts. Will he get through?

#3

Most supporting characters are memorable

A strong aspect which helps the show is the characters' writing. From Mercy's neighbors to the investigation officers to even a referigator serviceman, everyone has something to add to the story. The show throws curveballs at you, captures your attention and doesn't let go. With little to no fluff and believable characters, Kuttram Purindhavan gets a lot right.

#4

Makes you uncomfortable and asks you some tough questions

Kuttram Purindhavan feels more like a horror than a thriller, though not in the traditional sense. Heavily reminiscent of several chilling real cases, the storyline sends a shiver down your spine and asks you to confront the reality of child safety in India. The plot moves with a sense of urgency, and this race against time lends the show a sharp edge.

Verdict

Has pacing issues, but always remains watchable; 3.5/5 stars

Just when you think you've finally cracked the mystery and the case has been solved, the show throws some more twists at you! However, in doing so, it goes on for two more episodes and becomes a bit exhausting. Its tendency to shock you continuously doesn't always work, but overall, the show remains consistently watchable and thrilling. 3.5/5 stars.
