Title dispute erupts over Rajamouli's 'Varanasi'
What's the story
A title dispute has emerged over the upcoming film Varanasi, directed by SS Rajamouli. The disagreement is about the legal ownership of the movie's name. While Rajamouli's team announced their project as Varanasi, the title is currently owned by Rama Bramha Hanuma Creations, a company owned by CH Subba Reddy. The production house had registered a similar name, Vaaranasi, with the Telugu Film Producers' Council.

The title Vaaranasi has been with Reddy since 2023. The production house also renewed the name from June 24, 2025, to July 23, 2026. Meanwhile, the title of Rajamouli's film was revealed on November 15 at a grand launch held at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. It remains unclear if Reddy has lodged a complaint against Rajamouli's team over this issue.

If Reddy files a complaint, the film body will investigate the matter to determine the rightful owner of the title. This is especially important as both parties are adamant about their respective claims. Despite the dispute, Varanasi is set to hit theaters in multiple languages in the summer of 2027. The film stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles.
