    What's the story

Two Indian Army soldiers were killed and six others, including two civilians, were injured in a gunfight with terrorists in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

The encounter took place in the Ahlan Gadole forest area of Kokernag subdivision, where an anti-terror operation was being conducted by the Indian Army.

According to officials, the terrorists hiding in the forest opened fire when they noticed the search groups, resulting in an intense gun battle.

    Anti-terror operation

Encounter part of operation to flush out terrorists

The Indian Army's special forces, including paratroopers, are part of the operation in Kokernag.

The objective is to flush out terrorists believed to be foreigners.

The Chinar Corps, Indian Army, stated on social media, "Based on specific intelligence input, a Joint Operation was launched by #IndianArmy, @JmuKmrPolice & @crpf_srinagar today in general area Kokernag, Anantnag. Contact was established and firefight ensued."

    Ongoing operation

Reinforcements rushed to Ahlan Gadole; operation still underway

Reinforcements have been rushed to Ahlan Gadole to support the ongoing operation.

The encounter is still underway in this remote forest area with limited communication.

The wounded soldiers and civilians have been evacuated for medical treatment.

The clash is the second major incident in Kokernag in less than a year.

In September 2023, a commanding officer, a major, and a Deputy Superintendent of Police were among those killed during a gunfight with militants in Kokernag forest.
