Things got tense in Dehradun's Chowki Bazar when a social media post about Prophet Muhammad sparked a protest that turned violent on Monday evening.
Police ended up booking 400 unidentified people for rioting, promoting enmity, chanting religious slogans, and attacking police personnel after the crowd clashed with officers, leaving five cops injured.
The case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
CM calls post 'conspiracy to create unrest during festivals'
Police arrested 19-year-old Gulshan Rathore for allegedly posting the controversial content on Instagram.
Even though he was charged and the post was taken down, unrest continued and police had to use force to disperse the crowd.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called it a "conspiracy to create unrest during festivals" and promised tough action under Uttarakhand's new anti-riot law.
