A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region and the Hindu Kush area on Friday night, sending tremors across northern India. The quake was recorded at around 9:46pm and was felt in various cities, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir. Residents of high-rise buildings reported feeling strong jolts that lasted for a few seconds.

The tremors were felt in Noida, Chandigarh, Ludhiana (Punjab), Poonch, Srinagar, Udhampur (Jammu and Kashmir), Dehradun, among other places. No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been reported so far. The epicenter of the earthquake was located near Darawan at 71.01 degrees E and 36.52 degrees N.

Historical context

Tremors were also felt in January

This is the second time this year that Delhi and neighboring areas have experienced tremors. Earlier in January, a mild earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale shook New Delhi on a Monday morning, causing brief tremors across parts of the national capital. The NCS reported that the quake occurred at around 8:44am with its epicenter located in North Delhi at a shallow depth of five kilometers.
