Ahead of Bihar elections, government hikes MSP for rabi crops

India

Just before the Bihar elections, the government has increased minimum support prices (MSP) for six major rabi crops.
This move is meant to boost farmers' incomes and encourage them to try out different crops.

Wheat up by ₹160 per quintal

Wheat MSP is now ₹2,585 per quintal (up by ₹160).
Safflower got the biggest hike—₹600 more, now at ₹6,540.
Lentils, rapeseed-mustard, gram, and barley also saw increases.
The idea: help farmers earn more and make crop choices less risky.

Profit margins look strong

Profit margins look strong: wheat growers could see returns of 109% over costs; rapeseed-mustard farmers about 93%.

New 'Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses'

There's also a new six-year "Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses" with a budget of ₹11,440 crore.
By 2031, the goal is to ramp up pulses farming and production—making India more self-reliant and opening up new rural jobs along the way.
