    What's the story

The Allahabad HC Bar Association (HCBA) has strongly opposed the repatriation of Justice Yashwant Varma, a decision taken by the Supreme Court Collegium after unaccounted cash, allegedly ₹15 crore, was found at his Delhi residence.

The HCBA's position was conveyed in a letter to the Chief Justice and other judges of the Allahabad HC.

    Concerns raised

HCBA raises concerns over collegium's decision

In their letter, the HCBA expressed surprise at the Collegium's decision to repatriate Justice Varma.

"Allahabad High Court is not a trash bin that he has been sent here," the Bar Association President Anil Tiwari told Bar and Bench.

"We will not accept corrupt people. We will close the court work if needed. this is a press release for general body meeting on Monday and then we will take action. We will go sine die if needed," Tiwari added.

    Lack of consultation

HCBA criticizes lack of consultation in judicial appointments

The HCBA expressed grave concern over the lack of consultation with the Bar while promoting its members to higher positions.

It said that neglect in this regard has resulted in corruption and severely damaged public faith in the judiciary.

The association also hinted at a possible conspiracy to divide the Allahabad HC into parts because of such issues.

    Transfer details

Justice Varma's transfer follows cash discovery

Justice Yashwant Varma was transferred back to the Allahabad High Court after unaccounted cash was found at his official residence in Delhi.

The money was discovered by firefighters, who were called in after a fire broke out during Holi on March 14.

They alerted police, who then informed the Supreme Court.

In the wake of the incident, the Collegium transferred Justice Varma back to Allahabad.

    Ongoing investigation

Investigation into Justice Varma's conduct underway

The SC is now holding a preliminary probe into Justice Varma's behavior.

Based on the results of this investigation, he might be asked to resign or removed from office by the Parliament under Article 124(4) of the Constitution.

His transfer to Allahabad will only be confirmed after approval from the union government.
