Amit Shah rejects restoration of Indus Waters Treaty
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made it clear: the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan won't be coming back.
He stated, "No, it will never be restored," and announced that India plans to redirect river water—previously flowing to Pakistan—into Rajasthan using a new canal.
Background of the treaty
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960, set the rules for sharing river water between India and Pakistan.
India suspended the treaty in April 2025 after a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir killed 26 civilians, blaming Pakistan's support for cross-border terrorism.
Pakistan's warning to India
Pakistan called India's move a breach of agreement and warned that cutting off water could be seen as an act of war.
Despite repeated requests from Pakistan to reconsider, India says talks won't happen until terrorism stops.
