Bengal districts prepare for flooding
Heavy rains in Jharkhand and Bihar have led to over 70,000 cusecs of water being released from the Durgapur Barrage, causing severe floods across parts of South Bengal—especially East Burdwan, Howrah, Hooghly, and Bankura.
Schools in some areas have closed and emergency repairs are underway as water levels keep rising.
Water released from Galudih reservoir
Flooding has gotten worse in West Medinipur, Jhargram, and Purulia after more water was released from Jharkhand's Galudih reservoir.
Rivers like Shilabati have overflowed, submerging towns such as Ghatal and Chandrakona.
Mamata calls emergency meeting
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called an emergency meeting and put ministers in charge of relief efforts.
Over 50 rescue camps are up to help people with food, water, and medical care.
The NDRF is on standby across all affected districts.
Officials say this is the heaviest monsoon since 1978—and they're pushing for better coordination with Jharkhand to prevent future flood chaos.
