Bengaluru: ISIS suspect ran illegal shawarma business in prison
Shakeel Hameed Manna, an inmate linked to ISIS, was found running an unauthorized shawarma business inside Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.
With help from some prison staff who smuggled in ingredients, he sold shawarmas at nearly double the usual price to other inmates.
The whole setup exposed serious security gaps and suggested some officials might have been involved.
Crackdown sparks suspensions and tighter security
After videos surfaced showing Manna with a mobile phone, authorities quickly shut down the food business and ramped up security checks on both staff and goods coming into the prison.
The National Investigation Agency launched a probe, and disciplinary action was taken against staff allegedly involved.
The case has put a spotlight on how easily rules can be bent behind bars—and just how much work is needed to fix it.
