Bengaluru police use AI to catch late-night firecracker rule-breakers

India

This Diwali, Bengaluru police rolled out an AI-powered system to spot and respond to firecracker violations after 10pm.
The tech helped tackle about 41% of complaints during the festival, marking the city's first real-time use of AI for this kind of enforcement.

How does it actually work?

AI software was added to over 200 surveillance cameras in busy areas like Srirampuram and KR Market.
It picked up on bursts of light, smoke, and crowd movement—then sent instant alerts with video snapshots and locations straight to police teams via WhatsApp for quick action.

Why does it matter?

The system made a real difference by cutting down noise pollution and improving air quality during celebrations.
It also meant safer public spaces at night.
