Cold wave grips J&K: Srinagar shivers at -4.4°C, Anantnag -5.7°C
What's the story
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), recorded its coldest night of the season so far with a temperature of -4.4°C on Wednesday. The cold wave has intensified across the region, including Ladakh, with most areas witnessing a sharp dip in temperatures. In South Kashmir, Shopian was the coldest inhabited area at -6.5°C while Pulwama and Baramulla recorded minimum temperatures of -5.8°C and -5.5°C, respectively.
Temperature drop
North and central Kashmir experience severe cold
North Kashmir also witnessed a significant drop in temperatures with Bandipora and Kupwara recording lows of -4.5°C each. In Central Kashmir, Budgam and Ganderbal recorded minimum temperatures of -4.6°C and -3.3°C, respectively. The higher reaches of the region witnessed the harshest conditions, with Zojila Pass recording an extreme low of -16.0°C, the lowest temperature in J&K this season so far.
Jammu update
Jammu region sees significant temperature drop
The Jammu region also witnessed a considerable drop in temperatures. While Jammu city recorded a temperature of 8.7°C, areas like Banihal (-1.5°C) and Bhaderwah (0.4°C) were near freezing. Other areas such as Katra (8.5°C), Kathua (8.2°C), Udhampur (4.6°C), Ramban (4.1°C) and Rajouri (2.0°C) also saw significant declines in temperatures, indicating that the cold wave has now reached the plains too. As per IMD, the minimum temperature recorded in Anantnag on Wednesday was -5.7°C; the maximum was 14°C.

Ladakh chill
Ladakh experiences early and steep drop in temperatures
In Ladakh, Kargil recorded the lowest temperature at -9.5°C, followed by Leh (-8.6°C) and Nubra (-7.7°C). Though sub-zero temperatures are common for the region, this early and steep drop indicates an impending harsher winter season. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, said temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir are projected to dip by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius over the next seven days.
