Coldrif cough syrup deaths: DEG levels way above safe limit

India

The government has confirmed that Coldrif cough syrup, made by Sresan Pharmaceuticals in Tamil Nadu, contained dangerously high levels of diethylene glycol (DEG)—a toxic chemical.
At least 11 children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan died after taking the syrup, and authorities are investigating the deaths and have initiated legal action against the manufacturer.
Production of Coldrif was officially stopped on October 3, 2025.

Investigation underway into links to child deaths

While initial tests missed the contamination, Tamil Nadu's FDA later found a staggering 48.6% DEG in one batch—way above the safe limit of 0.1%.
The Centre has started inspecting Sresan's factory and is testing samples of drugs manufactured in six states.
Teams from top health institutes are investigating links to the child deaths.
Stocks of Coldrif have been seized, manufacturing violations uncovered, and public warnings issued not to use the syrup.
Legal action against the manufacturer is underway.
