Delhi HC puts Kuldeep Sengar's life sentence on hold in Unnao rape case
Former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted for the 2017 kidnapping and rape of a minor girl in Unnao, has had his life sentence suspended by the Delhi High Court.
The court said a key POCSO section might not apply here, and granted him conditional bail after he spent over seven years in jail.
What's next: Bail rules, protests, and a long fight
Sengar can leave prison if he pays ₹15 lakh and finds three sureties. He must stay in Delhi and keep at least five kilometers away from the survivor's home.
The survivor has protested against his bail at India Gate, while the CBI has opposed suspensions or interim bail in the past and is likely to closely examine the conditions this time as well.
This case began back in 2017, saw months of delay before making headlines with protests and tragic losses—including the death of the survivor's father in custody—and was eventually moved to Delhi for safety reasons after an attack that killed two of her aunts.
