Explosions in Delhi: Why the NIA is stepping in

India

A car explosion in Delhi on November 10 killed at least 12 people and shook neighborhoods kilometers away.
Because of how serious and far-reaching the incident is, India's top anti-terror agency—the National Investigation Agency (NIA)—has stepped in to handle things.
The NIA was created after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks to strengthen India's fight against terrorism.

What does the NIA do?

The NIA works under the Ministry of Home Affairs and can investigate national security threats anywhere in India—no state permission needed.
Since a 2019 law change, they can even take on certain international crimes.
With about 1,900 personnel using forensic science and data analysis, they've tackled big cases like the Indian Mujahideen probe and last year's Rameswaram cafe blast.
As of now, they're juggling around 500 ongoing investigations—making them a key player whenever major threats hit home.
