FIR filed after Panjab University protest turns tense
Chandigarh Police have registered an FIR against unidentified students and outsiders after a protest at Panjab University on November 10 got heated.
The demonstration, led by the Panjab University Bachao Morcha with student leaders and farmer unions, was about demanding long-delayed Senate elections.
Things escalated when protesters allegedly clashed with police and broke through campus security at Gate No. 1.
What sparked the unrest?
The protest started because of frustration over a recent government policy that aimed to replace PU's governing body elections with nominations—a move many saw as unfair.
Even though the government rolled back this policy on November 7, students and supporters kept pushing for actual elections due to ongoing delays.
Despite increased security and restricted campus entry, protesters managed to break in, leading to injuries among police officers and the FIR being filed.
