What's the story

The first image of the suspect behind the deadly blast near Delhi's Red Fort has surfaced. The suspect, Mohammad Umar, was reportedly driving a Hyundai i20 that detonated on Monday night, killing eight and injuring many more. He is believed to be part of the Faridabad terror module and worked as a doctor at Al Falah Medical College in Faridabad.

Suspect's network

Umar is a close associate of Adeel Ahmad Rather

Dr. Umar is known to Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather and Dr. Mujammil Shakil, two doctors arrested on Monday in the "white collar" terror module busted by police teams from Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana. Rather is a former senior resident doctor at the Government Medical College in Anantnag, and his inputs led to a raid in Faridabad on Monday. However, after both Rather and Shakil were arrested, Dr. Umar fled from Faridabad.

Forensic findings

Investigators confirm ammonium nitrate fuel oil used in explosion

According to NDTV sources, Umar panicked and planned the attack with two other associates by planting a detonator in the car. Investigators have confirmed that ammonium nitrate fuel oil was used in the high-intensity explosion. CCTV footage shows the vehicle entering a parking lot at 3:19pm and leaving at 6:48pm, just before the explosion. The car had been parked near Sunehri Masjid for nearly three hours before detonating.

Ownership trail

Hyundai i20 was initially owned by Mohammad Salman

The Hyundai i20 was initially owned by Mohammad Salman, who was arrested on Monday night. The car was later purchased by Aamir, then Tariq, who is also believed to be a member of the Faridabad module, and later by Mohammad Umar. It changed hands several times before reaching Umar. The vehicle's registration certificate is still in Salman's name and hasn't been officially transferred. Investigators are tracing its sale trail to determine if it was still with Tariq or sold further.

Forensic analysis

Forensic teams will conduct DNA tests to confirm identity

Forensic teams will conduct DNA tests to confirm the identity of the driver at the time of the explosion. The Delhi Police Special Cell is coordinating with the Faridabad Crime Branch and Jammu & Kashmir Police for information on explosives recovered in Faridabad. Initial investigations suggest ammonium nitrate was used at the blast site. Authorities are currently searching for accomplices involved in procuring large quantities of explosives.

Legal proceedings

Only 2 bodies have been identified so far

Out of eight bodies recovered from the blast site, only two have been identified so far. DNA testing and post-mortem examinations are required to confirm victim identities. The Delhi Police have invoked Sections 16 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in their FIR. A high alert has been sounded in Delhi and neighboring states, as well as Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Haryana, Punjab, Hyderabad, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Bihar is also on high alert.
