Gujarat HC grants rapist Asaram Bapu 6-month interim bail

Asaram Bapu, a self-styled godman serving life in prison for rape in two separate 2013 cases, one involving a minor, has been given six months' interim bail by the Gujarat High Court.
He requested release due to multiple health issues like heart disease and gastrointestinal illness—his lawyers said he needs treatment that jail can't provide.

Court's stance amid controversy

The court made it clear: Asaram's bail is strictly for medical care.
He's barred from holding religious events or public gatherings, must stay under police watch, and regularly report his status.
Survivors' lawyers pushed back, arguing his illnesses aren't critical enough for bail.
Still, the court sided with Asaram after noting similar decisions by other courts recently.
