Gujarat's forensic lab works tirelessly on crash victim identification
After the recent Air India crash in Ahmedabad, a team at Gandhinagar's Forensic Science Laboratory is racing to identify victims and bring closure to families. The crash involved a Dreamliner with 242 people, and also claimed 29 lives on the ground—including five MBBS students. Only one survivor has been found from this group, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh. So far, 47 victims have been identified through DNA testing.
Former Gujarat CM among identified victims
Experts are using DNA from bones and teeth, matching them with family samples using advanced sequencing tech. Among those identified is former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Despite personal challenges—like health issues at home—many on the forensic team (including eight women with young kids) have put in long hours to help grieving families. Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi praised their dedication and sacrifices for everyone affected by this tragedy.
