What's the story

The body of Y Puran Kumar, a Haryana Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who allegedly died by suicide at his Chandigarh home on Tuesday, was moved from the Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) on Saturday. The family claims they were not consulted before this decision.

Family's plea

Family yet to consent to autopsy

The family of the deceased officer has not yet consented to an autopsy. Amit Rattan, a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Bathinda Rural and Kumar's brother-in-law, expressed dissatisfaction over the body being shifted without their consent. The AAP MLA told reporters, "They have shifted the body without asking us. Injustice is being done with us."

Autopsy delay

Communication gap in police, family

The autopsy has been delayed due to a communication gap between the police and Kumar's family. The family wanted to see the body and requested a ballistic expert and a magistrate on the medical board for the autopsy. Chandigarh Director General of Police Sagar Preet Hooda admitted there was a communication gap, saying they won't proceed with the post-mortem until they get consent from Kumar's family.

Investigation underway

Haryana government sends minister to persuade family

The Haryana government has also sent Minister Krishan Lal Panwar to persuade the family to undergo an autopsy. A six-member special investigation team (SIT) has been constituted by Chandigarh DGP Hooda to investigate Kumar's death. The SIT includes senior police officials and will collect evidence, examine witnesses, and prepare a report in a time-bound manner.

Accusations made

Kumar accused senior officers of harassment

In his suicide note, Kumar had accused eight senior police officers of caste-based discrimination and harassment. His wife, Amneet P Kumar, has also sought amendments to the FIR lodged in connection with his death, asking for all accused to be accurately named and appropriate sections of the SC/ST Act to be included. The family had earlier refused consent for an autopsy until certain arrests were made.
