India aims to be 50% self-sufficient in palm oil by 2047
India, which heavily relies on palm oil imports, has a new plan: become 50% self-sufficient by 2047.
This roadmap, recently published by industry groups, aims to cut down reliance on imports and boost homegrown production.
Strategy focuses on smarter farming and better tech
The strategy's all about smarter farming and better tech—like upgrading the National Mission on Edible Oils, improving irrigation in rain-fed and North-Eastern areas, and turning low-yield rice fields into palm plantations.
The goal is to nearly double crop yields using improved seeds and farming practices.
Infrastructure and sustainability boost
There's also a big push for better rural roads and more processing plants (especially in the North-East), plus stronger public-private partnerships since most nurseries are privately owned.
On top of that, India wants to make sure new palm oil is grown sustainably—using traceable methods that help the environment as well as meet rising demand.
