'India can persuade Bangladesh to curb violence': Shashi Tharoor

India

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor thinks India should use its diplomatic influence to help calm the recent violence in Bangladesh.
He put it simply: "India cannot interfere in the domestic affairs of a neighboring country. But as a country which has contributed in many ways to the Bangladeshi nation and people, we can certainly exercise our diplomatic influence in Dhaka."

What's going on in Bangladesh?

Things have been tense after student leader Sharif Osman Hadi was shot in Dhaka in 2024 and later died in Singapore about a week later.
His death sparked violent protests, with mobs attacking media offices and targeting minority communities.

Why is Tharoor speaking up now?

Tharoor condemned the mob attacks and urged Bangladesh to work toward peace—especially with elections coming up soon.
He also questioned whether enough is being done to hold those responsible for the violence accountable, saying it's important for both nations' stability.
