India is rolling out electronic tolls nationwide by 2026
India
India is transitioning from manual toll booths to a fully electronic system across the country, as Union Minister Nitin Gadkari shared on Thursday.
The new system is already live at 10 places, and this upgrade means you'll soon be able to cruise highways without stopping for tolls.
The goal is to make road trips smoother and save everyone time, with the full rollout planned within a year.
FASTag and massive highway upgrades are part of the plan
The tech behind this shift is FASTag—an RFID sticker that auto-deducts toll fees from your account as you drive through. It's all part of the National Electronic Toll Collection program by NPCI.
Plus, there are 4,500 highway projects worth ₹10 lakh crore in progress right now, aiming to seriously level up India's travel experience and infrastructure.
